Digital boost to the green transition

The dual green and digital transition represents an opportunity for the Spanish economy and a major challenge for the public and private sectors. Ensuring a recovery of the country supported by these two levers, also involves taking advantage of synergies between the two by leveraging the power of technology and digitization to accelerate the move towards a sustainable, low-carbon and circular production model, and a fair transition that leaves no one behind.

To support the energy transition, work will be done on the digitization of electricity grids to promote the decarbonization of the economy, allowing more renewables to be integrated into the system, better management of energy flows and without penalizing electricity price signals, incentivizing electrification.

To ensure a just transition, an Environmental, Digital and Social Infrastructure Plan will be implemented in municipalities and territories in transition which, endowed with 100 million euros, will support local administrations in the implementation of infrastructure projects, technological solutions and new service models that contribute to the creation of a new strategy for the future and reinvention for these areas with the aim of retaining, recovering and attracting population.

In terms of ecosystem and biodiversity conservation, digitization and the use of disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, blockchain or machine learning play a critical role in monitoring sensitive areas and strategic decision making.

In the field of environmental management and circular economy, work will be done to develop digitization tools that enable efficient management of the information needed to, among other aspects, ensure a safe and accessible supply chain of materials.

Finally, with regard to integrated water management, a Digital Transition Strategy has been drawn up to improve knowledge and use of water resources, develop actions to monitor rainfall in river basins and on the coast and improve the safety of dams and reservoirs. The PERTE Water Cycle, approved on March 22, 2022 by the Council of Ministers, promotes the use of new information technologies in the integral water cycle to achieve the objectives set.
