Strengthening Strategic Supercomputing Capabilities

This action seeks to facilitate access and use by SMEs and the business fabric of the supercomputing centers existing in the different Autonomous Communities and to introduce communication and quantum computing in projects on different topics, including mobility and climate change.

Thanks to this action, the "Quantum Spain" project has been launched, in which 22 million euros out of a total of 73 million euros have been invested. With the project Quantum Spain:

  • A high-performance quantum computer will be developed and made available to the research community for the development of artificial intelligence.
  • A cloud-based remote access service to the processor will be set up.
  • Libraries of useful quantum algorithms (Quantum Machine Learning) will be developed, applicable to real problems (quantum chemistry, finance, optimization of production chain processes, cryptography and any other problem in various fields), for end users in both companies and public entities.

In order to democratize access to its supercomputing resources, it is essential to create an agreement with the Spanish Supercomputing Network (RES). Also, a project will be carried out with the RES to create a quantum computing ecosystem that will generate the necessary infrastructure to be able to develop quantum algorithms for the application of artificial intelligence. A budget of EUR 22 million will be allocated to this project. This is an investment focused on access to the supercomputing already existing in Spain and on the creation of a quantum ecosystem.
