The digital transformation of the transport system (including freight transport) will facilitate modal integration, service optimization and improved traffic management, resulting in greater competitiveness and sustainability. Through the use of digital technologies, reliable, quality data can be made available in real time, and in an open and accessible form for the different modes of transport (schedules, fares, routes, incidents, etc.), allowing for greater economic and environmental efficiency.
To promote the digitalization of passenger and freight transport, within the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, specifically within Investment 4 of Component 6, called Support Program for Sustainable and Digital Transport, a line of action has been included, endowed with 220 million euros, and destined exclusively to the digitalization of transport.
Of this 220 million, half will go to projects for the digitalization of passenger and freight transport services of the Autonomous Communities, so that they can carry out the digitalization of their administrative services related to transport services on demand and the digitalization of freight and passenger transport by road or rail.
The other half of the budget is earmarked for the digitalization of private passenger transport companies providing road transport services and private companies involved in road freight transport, in order to subsidize the implementation of the software and hardware systems necessary for their digitalization.
In relation to traffic management systems, investments in digitalization will be undertaken for the promotion of:
- The European Rail Transport Management System (ERTMS).
- Intelligent Transport Services for the road sector (ITS).
- Implementation of the Single European Sky.
- Air Traffic Management Systems (SESAR).
In addition, in relation to transport systems, actions aimed at the digitalization of ports and the digitalization of passenger and freight transport services at national, regional, and local level will be carried out.
In parallel, the digital transformation of the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda will be enhanced through the implementation and promotion of the BIM methodology in the public sector and the development of the Ministry's Digital Transformation Plan.
All these measures for the digital transformation of the transport system and the digital and sustainable transformation of the public transport system will also promote the availability of transport data and, in this way, will contribute to the future development of the integrated mobility data space (EDIM) envisaged in the Draft Bill on Sustainable Mobility.
